Dental care is essential for the long term health and well being of
your pet. Accumulated plaque and tartar will cause bad breath, and can lead to periodontal
disease, tooth loss and infection elsewhere in the body [kidneys, liver and
heart in particular] if left untreated.
While
the thought of brushing your pet's teeth may seem over the top to some, it
may very well be the most important thing you can do for your pet outside of
proper nutrition, exercise and weight control. Most companion animals hide pain well. If the
mouth above were your own, it is likely you would be crying in pain; we know
it is no different for dogs and cats.
For their health and comfort, PREVENTION is the key. Once advanced, dental disease cannot be completely
reversed.
We
recommend regular (daily) tooth brushing, combined with other dental
products such as - tartar fighting foods (Hill's t/d™ or Purina DH™),
VOHC
Approved dental chews, rinses, gels and OraVet™ Home Care kits. The more you
can do at home, the healthier your pet's mouth will be.
Our
skilled veterinary staff can help you design a dental care plan that works
well for you and your pet based on their current level of dental disease. We
can teach you how to get the process going and how to keep your pet's smile
looking bright.
We
will also advise you when your pet needs a professional cleaning with one of our
doctors. Most people have their teeth cleaned twice a year and many pets
require the same frequency. [Remember, once a year for a pet, would be the
same as every 5-7 years for a person!] |
